Start with a FREE 15 Minute Phone Consultation

Dr. McSwain offers you a FREE 15 minute phone consultation to better understand your medical concerns and healthcare goals.  It's important to see if working with Dr. McSwain and the Michigan Center for Functional Medicine is a good fit for everyone. During that time,  Dr. McSwain will share more about the vast array of treatments and services available at the clinic.

New Patient Functional Medicine Visit

This a one hour visit with Dr. McSwain so that she receive a 360 degree overview of the your health. During this visit, you will receive more information about best ways to move forward. Dr. McSwain generally offers some more tailored treatment recommendations at this time.

The initial intake involves completing a comprehensive health history questionnaire, symptom survey and food diary which will provide valuable information about your medical concerns and health goals.

At your initial appointment, you and Dr. McSwain will have an in-depth review of your history, perform a detailed physical examination with emphasis on discovering the intensity of the symptoms as well as designing an osteopathic treatment plan. The nutritional exam evaluates specific points which demonstrate how your body systems are functioning and identifies nutritional deficiencies. At the conclusion of the initial visit, you will receive an individualized program and guidance on the first steps.

Healing from chronic disease is a journey that we will hasten by working together intensely. As Dr. McSwain explains, you feel as if you have been embraced in a supportive and healing hug as we work together to accelerate your healing process. Our programs apply the ancient wisdom of improving health through body alignment and nutrition supplementation.

Osteopathic manipulation appointments are scheduled every 7-10 days initially and then will be spaced as the body begins to accept the new baseline (reset the homeostasis point).  Functional Medicine appointments are scheduled monthly and as needed.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual. - Institute for Functional Medicine

What is the benefit to me?

Our symptoms and our current state of health are an accumulation of actions, events, and environmental influences that have taken place over the course of our entire lives. Events in our distant past, even our childhood years, may provide clues to solving the puzzle and identifying the root cause. Even events that occurred at or before birth, influenced by your mother’s health years before you were born, may play a role.

Scientists are discovering that our genes and the way they are expressed are influenced by what our ancestors may have experienced several generations ago. In fact, this discovery has spawned a whole new scientific discipline – epigenetics – to understand how our nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and events in our daily life influence gene expression. Imagine that somehow last winter your small backyard garden had a spill of 10 gallons of gasoline, and you didn’t know about it. In the spring your seedlings do not take root and grow, leaving you wondering “What’s wrong with these seedlings?” That’s why a “Big Picture” history is so important.

Do you use technology?

Yes, we use advanced software called Living Matrix for intake forms for your history and timeline to assess your Functional Medicine Matrix. We also use a patient friendly electronic medical record.

Imagine yourself working with a physician and a team that address the root cause analysis.
